A Personal Stylist’s Guide to Wearing Brown as Your New Black

Brown Is My New Black

I’m wearing brown in the way I used to wear black.

For years, black was my default neutral. It was the colour I reached for without thinking because I knew it worked with almost everything.

But since discovering Colour Analysis, chocolate brown and other deeper shades of brown have slowly started taking black’s place in my wardrobe.

Brown gives me so much of the versatility I love about black, but it feels softer and works beautifully with so many other colours. It’s also something I talk about regularly in my Colour Analysis sessions: finding the right neutrals can completely change how easily your wardrobe works together.

And that’s one of the things I love most about Colour Analysis.

It isn’t about being told which colours you can and can’t wear. It’s about discovering the colours that naturally enhance you, then learning how to wear them in a way that still feels completely like you.

For me, that has meant embracing brown as a wardrobe neutral.

So, is black still your go-to, or have you discovered a new favourite neutral?

How to Wear Brown as a Neutral

If you’re used to wearing black, you don’t need to suddenly replace half your wardrobe with brown. Start small.

A brown belt, pair of loafers, handbag or jacket is an easy way to introduce warmer neutral tones and see how they work with the clothes you already own.

Here are some simple brown outfit ideas to try:

  • White shirt + blue jeans + brown belt and loafers

  • Navy blazer + tan chinos + brown shoes

  • White T-shirt + straight-leg jeans + brown sneakers

  • Denim jacket + brown corduroy trousers + white trainers

  • Colourful rugby shirt + blue jeans + brown suede sneakers

  • Brown cardigan + graphic tee + denim shorts

  • Denim shirt + camel trousers + brown ankle boots

  • White button-down shirt worn open + brown tank + loose jeans

  • Navy sweatshirt + tan trousers + brown canvas sneakers

  • Olive utility jacket + cream T-shirt + brown wide-leg utility pants

  • Cream sweater + black trousers + chocolate-brown crossbody bag

Could Brown Be Your New Black?

If black has always been your default, maybe it’s time to give brown a little more space in your wardrobe.

From chocolate and espresso to camel and tan, there are so many shades to explore. The key is finding the brown tones that work with your colouring, your wardrobe and your personal style.

You might just discover your new favourite neutral.
